Tomaz Viana
Studied the XVIII century European cabinet making and wood carving techniques at Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo, Lisboa.
Works in Cascais, a suburban coastal city next to Lisboa.
Elegance, refinement, sophistication and sculptural forms are a constant preoccupation in my designs.
The technical constructive designs are meticulously elaborated to provide the pieces an everlasting resistance to time and use.
Today pieces will be tomorrow antiques, made to age and be passed on to future generations, gaining patina and time.
All pieces are hand made, finished with a blade from a hand plane, chisel or scrapper. Sandpaper is not used.
The use of these tools, tuning, sharpening, creating is an ongoing evolutionary process to master the craft.
Gaining the memory of the hand.
Flaws, knots, cracks are natural characteristics of wood. This will be cherished and not disguised.
The hand work of the cutting blade on the wood is visible and will not be disguised. Primitive.
Sourced wood are European, Iberian, Portuguese. From oak woods in France or Italy, a single specimen fallen on a winter storm, a dead walnut or sequoia from a neighbouring farm or old olive trees from an abandoned plantation. No stamps, no fake certificates of origin or cargo ships.
A new project or commissioned piece will ignite the creative spark and the search for a perfect design,
A commissioned piece based on a previous design leads the way to perfection of forms and constructive methods.
All pieces are numbered and signed.
